Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about how Mosaic works.

The basics

What is Mosaic?

Mosaic is a welcoming daily puzzle made for people who are often left out by word, maths, spelling, or trivia games. Everyone can solve the same shared challenge, then keep going with unlimited timed or relaxed puzzles. Fill the grid so every row and column contains each symbol exactly once. Grid sizes range from 4×4 to 8×8, with eight symbol themes to choose from.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free. No account is required. Optional adverts on the web version help cover hosting costs.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the game and play. Your progress and settings are stored locally on your device.

Daily Challenge

Does everyone get the same puzzle?

Yes. The Daily Challenge uses a deterministic seed based on the current UTC date and grid size. Everyone playing the same size on the same day gets the same puzzle, worldwide - a small shared ritual you can compare with friends without spoiling the answer.

When does the daily puzzle reset?

At midnight UTC each day, a new puzzle is available for all four grid sizes.

Can I replay a past daily puzzle?

Yes. Visit the archive to find and replay past Daily Challenges.

Can I share my result without spoiling the solution?

Yes. After completing a Daily Challenge, the share card shows a grid of coloured squares indicating which cells you got right first time and which required corrections. It does not reveal the actual symbols.

Playing the game

What if I place a wrong symbol?

The cell shakes and the conflicting cell is highlighted. The wrong guess is recorded and 100 points are deducted in scored modes. You can try again by double-tapping the cell to clear it, then placing a different symbol.

What are hints?

Each puzzle provides a limited number of hints (3 to 7 depending on grid size). Tapping Hint places one correct symbol in a randomly chosen empty cell. Using a hint costs 50 points. Hint cells are then locked and cannot be cleared.

Can I undo a move?

There is no undo button. Double-tap a filled cell to clear it and start again with that cell.

What happens if my score reaches zero?

In scored modes (Daily Challenge, Infinite Timed), the puzzle ends as a loss if the score reaches zero. Switch to Infinite Relaxed mode if you prefer to solve without any score pressure.

Game modes

What is the difference between Infinite Timed and Infinite Relaxed?

Both modes give you randomly generated puzzles. Infinite Timed uses a score that counts down with time and penalises wrong guesses and hints. Infinite Relaxed removes the score and timer entirely - just the puzzle.

Settings

Can I change the symbols?

Yes. Eight symbol themes are available in Settings: Default (geometric shapes), Animals, Text (letters A–H), Numbers (1–8), Nature, Space, Ocean, and Food. The theme can be changed at any time without affecting puzzle logic.

Is there a high contrast mode?

Yes. The contrast toggle button in the game increases the difference between foreground and background elements. The preference is saved for your next visit.

Can I change the font?

Yes. The Settings menu includes a font selector with system default, Open Sans, Arial, and OpenDyslexic options.

Offline and installation

Can I play offline?

Yes. Once you have loaded the game with an internet connection, it works fully offline. Assets are cached by the service worker on first load.

How do I install Mosaic to my home screen?

On iOS (Safari): tap the Share button and choose "Add to Home Screen." On Android (Chrome): tap the menu button and choose "Add to Home Screen" or "Install App." On desktop Chrome: look for the install icon in the address bar.

Android app

Is there an Android app?

Yes. The Mosaic Android app is available on the Google Play Store. It contains the same game but without browser UI, with AdMob ads, and with full offline support baked in from install.

Is the Android app the same puzzle as the web version?

Yes. The Daily Challenge uses the same seed on both platforms, so the puzzle is identical. Scores are local to each device and are not shared between platforms.
